Onsite TESOL: Introduction

Over a period of 4 (120 Hour Certificate) or 6 (220 Hour Diploma) weeks you will tackle a wide variety of subjects and teaching related situations. Our onsite courses were designed to make them both practical and interactive - we believe that the best way of learning to teach a certain aspect of the English language is to try it out yourself. Our TESOL trainers will make sure that each and every teacher has an opportunity to practice teaching each skill during the core training period - only then will you be prepared to tackle real classes during your practicum and later work related classroom environment.

Course Work - During onsite TESOL sessions we hold training classes from Monday to Friday starting at 10 AM and finishing at 5 PM (with 1 hour for lunch between 2 PM and 3 PM). Your TESOL trainer will prepare a weekly schedule of topics and present this schedule to the class every Monday morning. Homework will be given on a daily basis (except weekends) and each day there will be hands-on training components built into the lessons. Teachers will be provided with a journal notebook which will be used to take notes during class and for daily assignments.

Practicum - The practicum component of the onsite courses will be taken during the final week and will consist of practice teaching at local schools in and around Kunming, Zhuhai or Hong Kong. Teachers will also get a chance to sit-in and watch other professional teachers as they teach their own classes before starting to teach themselves. Practicum will take 5 days with classes scheduled throughout the day for individual teachers.

Teacher Lounge - Our center is home to our teacher lounge (with free coffee or tea, desktop computers, an English textbook library and high-speed wireless internet access). Teachers are welcome to relax before and after their classes and also have an opportunity to chat with our TESOL trainers and School Liaison Officers in a more relaxed environment. Our teacher lounge is open 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday (9:30 AM to 9 PM).

Free Survival Mandarin Chinese Classes - We offer all TESOL course participants free "survival" Mandarin Chinese lessons taught during weekends. Each weekend you will spend 2 hours with a professional Mandarin Chinese teacher learning the basics of the language. Over the 4 or 6 week TESOL course you will have 8 to 12 hours of in-class Mandarin Chinese instruction.

Benefits of taking an onsite course are:

  • More face-to-face time with our TESOL trainers.
  • Able to practice all aspects of teaching in front of the class and TESOL trainers.
  • Ongoing lifetime job assistance from our qualified School Liaison Officers.
  • Studying with a group and taking part in group assignments and activities.
  • Spending 4+ or 6+ weeks living in a foreign country and learning new customs.
  • Opportunity for travel during weekends (when no homework is given).
  • Daily feedback and support from TESOL trainers.
  • Taking part in practicum sessions at local schools (as well as short teaching oriented activities during the course itself). Teachers will be able to watch qualified professionals teaching classes before starting their own teaching during the final part of week 4 or 6.
  • Free Survival Chinese Mandarin classes.
  • Attending in-person interviews and choosing a school while "in country" and not over the internet.
